It is no secret that I spend a lot of time up at New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee during the Summer. For the past two years, I actually think I’ve spent almost every weekend from July to August hanging out at the lake, enjoying the warm days and cozying up by the fire during the cooler nights. Needless to say, I’ve become an expert at layering and knowing what to pack (and what to leave at home!) for a weekend up at the lake. Before heading up to New Hampshire, I always ask myself the following questions: (1) How many days / nights am I going to be there? (2) Are there any special activities planned? (3) What is the weather supposed to be like (and what, through experience should I bring along knowing fully well that New England weather is a nightmare?)

If you are headed to the lake this Summer, here is my recommendation of what to wear during a weekend away:

For the most part, summer by any lake is going to mean swimsuits, sandals, and maxi dresses. Dressing for the daytime is as easy as you want it to be. When the heat evaporates and the cooler weather sinks in, you’ll want to be prepared with layers such as a hooded sweatshirt or long pants (jeans, athletic pants). This is where having a transitional outfit comes in handy! I love transitional outfits. Items like this sweater from Femme Boutique make it easy to wear all day long because of the design. The sweater is thick but is still breathable so it is easy to keep warm while out on the boat (when a boat is moving at any speed – trust me- you’ll be chilly) and stay cool when things start to heat up because of the knitted holes.

I paired this lake style sweater with white shorts (following my traditional red / white / navy color combination) and Kate Spade sneakers for a little more sparkle. Truthfully, however, I would avoid wearing white pants at nighttime. Mosquitoes and other annoying bugs are attracted to brighter colors so when it comes time to sit by the fire at night, switching from white shorts to  black athletic pants is always a good idea.

That is it for now ladies and gentleman! The number one key to making sure you have a great look that is functional for any type of travel is to plan ahead and always bring layers!!

You can shop my picks at Femme Boutique Boston (including this fringe sweater – currently on SALE!!) and use the code ” RACHEL” for 15% off of your entire order!
