Its that time of year again! Every year in August the countdown begins for fall style to make its debut come September! I’m extremely fortunate that I get to be a New Englander this time of year because of all of the exciting places and experiences that New England has to offer this season. With that in mind, fall fashion definitely plays a major role in the life of a fashionable New Englander and I’m excited to start piecing together my wardrobe! With the change in colors, the cooler temperatures setting in, and classes being back in session*, I’m really looking forward to experimenting with new textures and outfit ideas for different fall occasions. To start, however, I’ve rounded up these 10 Fall Style Essentials to get ready! Each clothing item below is something that you can use to build an outfit around. Make sure to invest in the best quality that you can afford so you can wear each item on repeat and shake it up with the latest shoes, accessories, and trends.
Black Skinny Jeans – I’ve never been a big fan of skinny jeans. HOWEVER, the one exception to the rule that I have found for skinny jeans (and black / dark wash ones in particular) is that they make an excellent addition to your fall wardrobe because of how easily they wear with BOOTS. Great boots can make or break an outfit and theres nothing better than slipping into a pair of jeans that can fit nicely into a snug knee-high leather boot. Skinny jeans take the cake when it comes to fitting that job. Here are a selection of my favorites for this fall:
THICK Black Leggings– I emphasis on the ‘thick’ factor here. Buying a great pair of leggings that can take you through Fall and Winter without being A) see-through or B) ripping is a smart move. Pair them with an oversized cardigan, bulky sweater, or your favorite knit for the best look.
Light Wash Denim Jeans – Light wash jeans in the fall is something that I’ve always loved. The look of light colored jeans with a flannel just screams autumn to me and I love it! My #RRStyleTip for buying jeans? Watch out for back pockets! Larger pockets hide a large back side, and smaller pockets emphasize a tiny one. Light wash jeans also have a tendency to emphasize your bottom half so keep this in mind when trying on different styles.
Long Sleeve Shirts – (Various Colors) – Layering sweaters, shirts, jackets, and accessories is what makes fall fashion so great! My picks for long sleeve shirts are usually cotton (and pima cotton especially if you can get it!) and in lots of fall tones (deep oranges, reds, mustard-yellow, forest-green, taupe, etc.) It is also a good idea to keep different styles of long sleeve shirts available such as collared button downs, Henley’s, and a couple of patterned (such as my new favorite French Sailor shirt) ones to mix things up.
Statement Leather Jacket – A great leather jacket can make or break your look for fall layering and when done correctly, can leave you looking stylish and tough 😉
Camel Coat – Essential for mid to late Autumn, when the weather starts to get cooler and you need a more durable-yet-fashionable coat that pairs well with a fall color palate.
Neutral Color Body Suits– Body suits have been really in this (and last) year! Great for layering lightly. Body suits work really well to show off an excellent pair of jeans or bottom half and come in handy when you are trying to layer and just want something thin to wear as a base layer.
Knee Length Skirt : The go-to fall skirt. Knee-length and pencil style skirts help to elongate the look of shorter legs and also give a classy, feminine, and romantic look to any outfit. I stock up on neutrals like black, white, gray, and tan.
Various Statement Sweaters– Cowl necks, v-neck cuts, ribbed designs, you name it! Having a couple of statement sweaters is a great way to amp up your style this fall.
The Cape – Have you ever watched the scene from The Incredibles where Edna is designing super hero outfits and goes off about how much she hates capes? This does not apply for fall fashion. This year, the statement cape is where its at. Trust me on this one.
(*Its my first time going back to college since I left 3 years ago and I’ll be honest, I’m a little nervous! Any body else going back to school as an adult? Comment below!!)
